Will Trump Abolish the FCC?

When President-elect Donald Trump announced the priorities for his first 100 days in office, he included a stipulation that for every new federal regulation an agency makes; two existing regulations MUST be eliminated.

For businesses and individuals who have felt harmed by excessive regulation over the past few years, this is good news. While it is yet to be determined if President Trump can succeed with this effort, it would at least appear that he is committed to limiting and reducing the number of regulations that federal agencies like the FCC and FTC can make.

What changes are in store for the FCC under President Trump?

During the weeks leading up to the 2016 election, Mark Jamison, a member of Trump’s FCC transition team, published a blog entitled “Do we need the FCC?” In the article he states that the FCC is “suppressing economic analysis and being politically driven” and that “we don’t need the FCC, but we still need an independent agency”.

Does the new president share this opinion?

That is the big question. If so, involvement by the FCC and FTC could decrease. One thing is for certain, President Trump will flip the balance of the FCC leadership from Democratic to Republican control. The upcoming years should be very interesting for the direct marketing industry under the Trump administration. For now we’ll have to wait and see.
