Frequently Asked Questions

What is The TRACED Act?

The TRACED Act is federal legislation that was signed into law at the end of 2019. It is a major overhaul of the TCPA that directs the FCC and other government agencies to enact a number of regulatory strategies to reduce the frequency of illegal robocalls.

What is caller ID spoofing?

Caller ID spoofing is a technique in which callers make a call appear as if it is originating from a different phone number than its actual originating station. Scammers often use it to appear as if they are calling from the same area code as the recipient of the call.

However, there are a number of legitimate uses of caller ID spoofing. For more than a decade, any call placed from inside the offices of The New York Times appeared to be sent from the phone number 111-111-1111. This practice was instituted to mask the extensions of individual reporters, should any subpoenas of call records be made to try to discover their identities. This practice was discontinued in 2011 in part to comply with legal changes pertaining to caller ID regulations.

What are robocalls?

There is no formal or even widely agreed upon definition of what constitutes a robocall. It can be used to mean something as specific as “a prerecorded voice call” or something as vague as a general pejorative for unwanted sales calls.

How do I stop RoboKiller and Nomorobo apps from blocking my calls?

There are a number of smartphone applications that aim to block incoming calls. RoboKiller and Nomorobo are two such apps. Actively monitoring your caller ID reputation score will help you understand which calls are being blocked and allow you to take action to avoid that. Our TrustCall® product can actively monitor robocall blocking app scores for you.

What is STIR/SHAKEN?

STIR/SHAKEN are interrelated call authentication protocols that stand for Secure Telephony Identity Revisited and Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs. They are a significant aspect of technological efforts to combat illegal robocalls.

Is STIR/SHAKEN a James Bond reference?

Yes. The STIR protocols were developed and named first. When the SHAKEN protocols were developed, the unusual backronym was created in order to serve as a reference to James Bond’s preference that his vodka martinis be shaken, not stirred.

Does STIR/SHAKEN apply to text messages?

While STIR/SHAKEN does not directly apply to text messages, there are protocols in place for sending authorized text messages over A2P 10DLC. Businesses not registered for this protocol may have their texts blocked.
