The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) Chairman Ajit Pai announced that he will host a summit on July 11th, 2019 to examine telco companies progress in implementing the SHAKEN (Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs) and STIR (Secure Telephony Identity Revisited) caller ID authentication standards. This is another significant step toward ensuring implementation of more reliable caller ID information and helping in the fight against spoofed robocalls.

The July 11th, 2019 SHAKEN/STIR robocall summit will focus on lessons learned from service providers that have already begun to deploy call authentication technology, and any challenges or technical barriers in the deployment of SHAKEN/STIR by voice providers. This public event will also focus on the use of caller ID authentication to reduce malicious spoofed robocalls.

Implementation of the caller ID authentication standards will help consumers better trust caller ID information when their phone rings. Before SHAKEN/STIR becomes a reality, it will be required that phone companies adopt matching standards for how calls are marked as legitimate and how the authentication signature is reliably passed between carriers before it gets to the consumer.

The summit will be held at the Commission Meeting Room at FCC Headquarters, 445 12th Street, S.W. Washington, D.C. 20554.
